Cultural and Recreation Amenities
To quote Elizabeth Barrett Browning – “How do I love thee, let me count the ways.” This is the way we feel about Baxter and the entire area of Putnam County. Let us tell you all the very good things about us. At the present time, downtown hosts:
- Our annual Labor Day Street Fair and Parade of the Proud
- Christmas Parade culminating in a Christmas reception in the Historical Sewell
Building with activities and Santa for all to enjoy
- School and Athletic Fundraisers
- Fire Department safety programs in the schools
- Friends of the Historical Welcome Center Fundraisers
The Baxter Elementary School PTO hosts movie night at the city’s park throughout the year.
Outside the city limits, Twin Lakes Catfish Farm hosts a Bluegrass Festival, fishing tournaments, and a Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration.
In the very near future, the following events will occur:
- Ground breaking ceremony for the Baxter Historical Welcome Center
- Dedication of the Baxter Historical Welcome Center
- Celebrating Tennessee with an Iris Festival
Baxter is nestled in one of the most picturesque settings. Within a short driving distance are three major Army Corp of Engineer lakes with 1,400+ miles of shorelines, six beautiful golf courses, three state parks, and six city parks.
The City recently adopted a city flag. We are only the third city in the state of Tennessee to have a flag. City flags are available for purchase at Baxter City Hall.
We would be remiss if we did not include the vibrant businesses in the city limits and on the fringe of our city limits.
The scenery in our county is some of the most beautiful in the United States. At every season of the year, a scenic drive from the east to the west of Putnam County will take your breath away.
There are major attractions scattered throughout the county. There is something for everyone. A thirty minute or less drive from downtown Baxter in any direction will provide entertainment for visitors.
This is only a sampling of attractions in this area:

South of the downtown, Baxter Junction, is under development. Huddle House, Love’s Travel Center, Subway, McDonalds, Mid State Wine and Spirits, and Beer and Cigar Emporium are currently located in Baxter Junction. The city would like to recruit additional restaurants and a major motel chain for this area. In the Cookeville area, there are approximately 1,400+ motel rooms. We are affiliated with the Putnam County’s Convention Visitors Bureau and the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. Baxter has received a grant for the construction of a Historic Welcome Center.
